How can I include salicylic acid in my skincare?

Our take

If you're looking to incorporate salicylic acid into your skincare routine, you're on the right track! This powerhouse ingredient is fantastic for oily skin and can help manage those occasional hormonal breakouts. Since you’ve had success with a salicylic acid face wash in the past, consider exploring affordable Indian brands like Neutrogena, The Face Shop, or Minimalist, which offer effective options without breaking the bank.

Our Take: Let's Talk About That Salicylic Acid Situation

Okay, we need to have a little heart-to-heart about this because honestly, the skincare anxiety is real and we've all been there. You're scrolling through reviews at 2 AM, spiraling because someone on the internet had a terrible experience with the exact product that was finally working for you. The panic is understandable, but let's unpack what's actually happening here.

The reality is that skincare is deeply personal, and what works for one person might be a complete disaster for another. Those bad reviews you saw? They're not necessarily lying, but they're also not your story. Many negative reviews come from people using salicylic acid who either have a different skin type than yours, used it too frequently, or didn't follow up with proper hydration. For someone with oily skin like yours who's already using glycolic acid, adding salicylic acid could actually be a smart move – they work on different levels and can complement each other nicely in a routine.

Let's give credit where credit is due: your current routine is actually pretty solid. You've got a gentle cleanser, a lightweight moisturizer, chemical exfoliation with glycolic acid, and – most importantly – sunscreen. That's more than many people manage, and you should feel confident about that foundation. The fact that your acne cleared up with the salicylic acid face wash you were using isn't a fluke; it's evidence that the ingredient works for your skin. Trust that.

When it comes to affordable Indian brands, look for products featuring 2% salicylic acid – that's the sweet spot that's effective without being aggressive. Brands like Minimalist, The Ordinary (available online), and Joy offer solid options at student-friendly prices. You might also explore products from brands like Sebamed or Neutrogena, which are widely available and budget-conscious. The key is to start slowly – maybe two to three times per week – and see how your skin responds before building up frequency.

One more thing worth mentioning: those monthly hormonal breakouts you're experiencing are completely normal and not a failure of your skincare routine. They're a sign that your body is doing what bodies do, and no product is going to completely eliminate them. The goal isn't perfection – it's consistency and balance. Your skin has already shown you it responds well to salicylic acid, so rather than letting bad reviews scare you off, consider this your permission to return to what works. Sometimes the best skincare decision is simply trusting your own experience over strangers on the internet.

I used Cetaphil cleanser, ponds light moisturizer and glycolic acid thrice a week. Other than that I use sunscreen.

And i used to use ghar soaps salicylic acid face wash , it did work. But I saw too many bad reviews about it and got scared.

Please help. Suggest indian brands and a bit affordable! (Student here). I had acne but it went away with that one, I have a little bit of breakout maybe once a month (mostly hormonal) but still I have extremely oily skin.
