Suggestions for first time dying hair?
Our take

The quest for a hair transformation can feel like a rite of passage, especially for those contemplating their first dive into the world of hair dye. In a recent Reddit post, user /u/Lusciousfruit shared their dilemma about wanting to change their hair color for the first time, feeling encouraged to take the plunge now that they're no longer bound by office policies. This moment of personal freedom is not just about aesthetics; it’s a chance to reclaim confidence and embrace change. However, Lusciousfruit's journey also highlights the pressure many face when making such a significant decision. From friends suggesting that only certain shades will suit them to concerns about how quickly vibrant colors fade, this scenario encapsulates the complexities of self-expression through hair.
The beauty of hair dyeing lies in its transformative power, much like the excitement surrounding new skincare innovations, such as those featured in our article, Are PDRN skincare products that different?. However, unlike skincare, where one can often experiment without immediate and visible consequences, hair dye is a more permanent declaration of intent—one that can evoke both exhilaration and hesitation. Lusciousfruit's initial inclination towards blonde is a common fantasy, a desire to embody that sun-kissed, carefree vibe. Yet, the cautionary tales from friends can stifle that creative urge. It raises an important question: how do we balance our personal desires against the advice of those around us?
In the realm of beauty, perceptions about what looks "good" are often influenced by societal standards and personal biases, which may not always align with one's true self. Lusciousfruit's contemplation of fun colors versus sticking to safer highlights reflects a broader societal dialogue about conformity versus individuality. The notion that certain colors suit specific skin tones can be limiting and discouraging. Instead, we should advocate for a more inclusive approach to beauty—one that celebrates personal expression and encourages individuals to experiment with colors that resonate with their identity. After all, hair is not just about looking good; it's about feeling empowered.
As the conversation around hair dye continues to evolve, it also intersects with discussions about self-care and mental health. In a world where personal and professional lives often collide, changing one's hair color can symbolize a fresh start, a reclamation of agency. This is particularly poignant for Lusciousfruit, who mentions feeling a boost in self-esteem through this change. It echoes the sentiments found in our article, Best smelling all purpose face creams?, where the pursuit of self-care products can similarly uplift one's spirit.
Moving forward, we should embrace the idea that hair dyeing, much like any form of self-expression, should be an adventure rather than a dilemma. What if we could shift the narrative from one of fear of judgment to one of celebration and exploration? As individuals like Lusciousfruit embark on their hair journeys, let's challenge the norms that dictate which colors are "suitable" and inspire each other to embrace our unique, vibrant selves. After all, life is too short to stick to neutrals—so why not go bold? What will you do with your hair today?
| I was wanting to see if anyone had any suggestions for changing my hair, I would really like to dye it since I haven’t ever put any color on it before. I was tempted at the thought of blonde but everyone kept telling me that I would be washed out and that it wouldn’t suit me. I got laid off a few weeks ago and would really like to go kind of crazy with it now that I don’t have to adhere to office policies (I also thought it would make me feel a little better about myself). Some friends have told me that all of the fun colors fade really quickly and, again, have told me that I should stick to died tips (like the last two photos) instead of changing my whole head because darker hair suits me more according to all the people in my personal life that I’ve asked, so now I’m a bit discouraged with the more fun looks or changing it all overall. - What hair colour? Wanted to go younger and thinner but didn’t work out.I've never been a fan of having my picture taken (never felt pretty enough to be comfortable with it), so the images are probably not that good. I HAVE been a fan of changing the colour of my hair though. Usually, I go back to being blonde. Last summer I was blonde, got some pink going (no pictures of me with that), and then went copper. As fall faded I started going blonder before trying silver grey over new years. Currently, I am very light faded blonde. I have a new job starting soon (brand manager for a beauty wholesaler) and am considering my next haircolour. The images are in a timeline, first from 2019 (hair half brushed dry before a hair dye) and the most recent is recent. Should I go darker, lighter, keep it? I would love to have the curly hair I have going at one point, but it's so time consuming and I have a job, home and child to take care of. submitted by /u/teacuptrooper [link] [comments]
