Our Take: Vintage Barrette Bliss: Retro Glamour vs. Safety Concerns

Okay, so here’s the tea: You’ve chopped your hair, you’re rocking that chic side-swept look, and you’ve unearthed some serious ’70s, ’80s, and ’90s barrette treasures from the digital ether. Suddenly, you’re channeling your inner retro queen, but a little voice whispers, “Wait a minute, is this vintage glamour a health hazard?” It’s a fair question, and one that dips into that delightful chaos of mixing nostalgic style with modern-day concerns. We totally get it. We’ve all rummaged through our closets for that perfect throwback piece, only to pause and wonder if it comes with any… unexpected baggage.

Let’s talk about these NOS (New Old Stock) barrettes. The thought process is relatable: “I played with these as a kid, and I’m still here, so what’s the big deal?” That’s the kind of unfiltered, confident logic we can get behind. The glamour of vintage fashion is that it whispers stories from another era, and sometimes, those stories don’t come with a strict ingredient list. You’re not looking for a corporate-approved accessory; you’re seeking a connection to a past aesthetic, a touch of playful rebellion against the mundane. And honestly, the idea of rocking a barrette that’s been patiently waiting for its moment in the sun since the Reagan administration? That’s pure, unadulterated style.

Now, while the idea of lead-testing your fabulous finds might seem a *tad* dramatic, it’s also a testament to the clarity we’ve gained over the decades regarding product safety. The world of couture and everyday accessories has evolved, and so have our expectations for what’s safe. So, while we champion the confidence and humor of embracing vintage, and certainly don't want to inject any unnecessary seriousness into your style journey, a little bit of practical know-how never hurt anyone. Think of it as an empowering move, not an apologetic one. It's about enjoying that retro glamour with peace of mind, so you can focus on perfecting your walk, not worrying about your accessories.

Howdy! I've recently cut my hair shorter and have been wearing it down sometimes, with one side pulled up above my ear with a barrette. I bought some Goody's and Scunci barrettes that are new, and then found some NOS Goody's barrettes (from '70s, '80s, '90s) on eBay. They're in the original packaging.

Do y'all think I need to worry about sanitizing these? Or testing them for lead or anything? I figure they're the same sort of things I did own when I WAS a kid in the '80s and I didn't die from lead poisoning...
