Had a 4 hour layover in Atlanta last night and noticed something weird

I was stuck at ATL for about 4 hours last night around 9pm…

Gate was pretty full, people just sitting around waiting, some walking back and forth, most on their phones.

What stood out to me was how quiet it felt.

At one point two people sitting near me started talking and ended up laughing, then left together to grab food.

Meanwhile the rest of us just stayed in our own little bubble.

Made me realize I don’t think I’ve ever actually talked to someone during a layover, even when I’m bored out of my mind.

Is that just an unspoken rule at airports or am I overthinking it?
