MSC Cruises has proposed using cruise ships currently stuck in the Persian Gulf to evacuate thousands of seafarers who remain stranded on commercial vessels in the region.

Speaking in Miami Beach on Tuesday, MSC Group’s Cruise Division Executive Chairman Pierfrancesco Vago said the company is in talks with the International Maritime Organization (IMO) about the plan.

He said several cruise ships are unable to leave the Gulf for now, but they could be used to move seafarers out of the area.

Vago said the situation is still changing and there is no clear timeline yet. He added that the company is staying prepared so it can act quickly if the opportunity comes.

At present, six cruise ships are in the region. These include MSC Euribia, TUI Cruises’ Mein Schiff 4 and Mein Schiff 5, Celestyal Journey, Celestyal Discovery, and Cruise Saudi’s Aroya.

Together, these ships can accommodate around 17,000 people, which could help move a large number of seafarers to safety.

He said MSC has already reduced the crew on board MSC Euribia to minimum manning levels. The ship was earlier scheduled to operate in Northern Europe in May, but those sailings have now been cancelled.

Other cruise operators with ships in the Gulf are facing the same issue, with vessels unable to move due to the current situation in the region. This has also affected cruise schedules beyond the Gulf.

MSC is continuing discussions with maritime authorities to find a safe and workable way to carry out the evacuation if it goes ahead. For now, the plan depends on how the situation develops and whether conditions allow ships to move.

Passengers affected by cancelled sailings have been advised to stay in touch with the cruise lines for updates on refunds or rebooking options. Meanwhile, efforts are focused on ensuring the safety of seafarers who are still on board vessels in the region.
