Flying with a 27” monitor in checked luggage — best way to pack it safely?

I’m trying to bring a 27-inch monitor with me on a flight (checked bag), and I want to make sure I don’t destroy it in the process.

Context:

  • The monitor would cost me ~$1000 where I’m going, but I paid ~$350 here
  • Shipping it isn’t worth it because of import taxes
  • I have the original box + foam, but it doesn’t fit in my suitcase unless I modify it
  • Flight is about 2 hours.
  • Monitor is a flat screen.

I’m considering two options:

Option 1:
Cut about an inch off both sides of the original box + foam so it fits in my luggage. Then wrap the whole box in bubble wrap and surround it tightly with clothes to absorb shocks.

Option 2:
Take the monitor out of the box completely. Do layers like this inside the suitcase: clothes → wrapping paper → cut foam/box side → monitor (wrapped) → foam/box → more clothes.

My concerns:

  • Baggage handlers being rough
  • Pressure or flex on the screen
  • Whether modifying the original packaging ruins its protection

Has anyone actually flown with a monitor like this before?
Would marking the bag as fragile even make a difference?

Thanks!

Edit 1: I will either check it as its own luggage or wrapping it up in towels/clothes/bubble wrap. I will keep you guys updated after Saturday.
