Absolute basics for somebody who regularly heat styles and would like to start embracing curls?
Our take
Absolutely, let's dive into the piece. The author, /u/withmell, shares her personal journey with embracing her naturally wavy, curly hair as summer nears—a process that feels both promising and perplexing. For her, curls are more than a style; they’re a reflection of authenticity. Yet she’s grappling with the reality of hair that tends to fall out, become crunchy, or lose definition after styling. This struggle is relatable for anyone who’s ever tried to keep their curls looking their best without sacrificing too much time or product.
What stands out is her honesty about the challenges. She doesn’t shy away from the messiness of managing curl magic, especially as she navigates different routines and products. The routine she’s tried so far—brushing, sectioning, applying curl cream and foam, scrunching with gel, and using a bonnet and silk pillowcase—feels like a step toward something better, but the outcome is inconsistent. She’s not just looking for a quick fix; she’s seeking a sustainable approach that respects her hair’s natural rhythms.
This situation underscores a crucial point: embracing curls isn’t about perfection, it’s about finding a rhythm that works for you. The article serves as a gentle nudge to rethink what “perfect” curls look like and how to adapt your routine without sacrificing confidence. It’s a reminder that self-expression in beauty should be comfortable, not complicated.
It also invites readers to consider their own hair types and what might serve them best. For someone like her, 2C fine hair with a history of heat damage adds another layer of complexity. The advice here isn’t one-size-fits-all, but it’s a valuable starting point. The tone remains upbeat and supportive, making the process less daunting and more achievable.
Ultimately, this piece reinforces that starting to love your natural curls is about patience and persistence. It’s a call to embrace the imperfections and celebrate the uniqueness that comes with your hair—because at the end of the day, confidence is what truly shines through.
I have naturally wavy/curly hair. For the past 2-3 years, I’ve been blowing it out regularly and leaving it straight, so I likely have some heat damage.
My natural hair type is 2C and fine.
Now that summer is approaching, I’d really like to start embracing my natural curls, but don’t know how to anymore.
I’ve tried brush styling and sectioning, and it’ll look really good at first, but then the curls will fall and it’ll feel all producty and limp.
My current curl routine. I’ve tried this routine about 3 times, and can’t really get it to work. It looks good right after styling, but then the next day it’ll get all crunchy and weird. I don’t know how to describe it, the curls just fall out and then my hair feels very producty.
I shampoo and condition with Redken all soft. Then, I section my hair into 3. In each section, I apply some of the Lush curl cream and a curl foam and brush style. When I’ve brush styled all 3 sections, I flip my hair upside down and scrunch in gel and heat protectant and diffuse.
To sleep with my hair, I use 3 small clips and flip all my hair upside down. I clip my hair into a pineapple (I don’t like using a hair tie because it stretches out my curls), and then I cover my hair with a bonnet and also sleep on a silk pillowcase.

- Curly hair is a PAIN as much as it is BEAUTIFULI recently started doing the full curly routine (leave-in, gel, scrunching) and while it looks BEAUTIFUL (I have 3B curls), I cannot stand how delicate the needs of curly hair are. I miss being able to just pull my hair into a normal ponytail, sleep on any side/direction I want, tuck hair behind my ear when it falls in my face, etc. For this reason, I want to wear it wavy - does anyone have any heatless methods to make the curls less "curls" and more "s-shaped waves" submitted by /u/Odd-Employee5424 [link] [comments]
- My curly hair refuses to listen to me: The curls aren't even, they're frizzy, and they're not all properly formedRecently watched a 3A/3B curly haired girl do her routine. When she applied her curl cream and scrunched, she got a good # of curls of fairly even size, and scrunching did NOT add any frizz For me, however, when I apply my leave-in + gel and scrunch, I get a) Various different sized curls: some very tiny, some very large, some very tiny ones connected to very large ones. It looks a bit odd b) When I scrunch, I can literally SEE the frizz even when my hair is wet. This gets worse as it dries Current Routine: Wash my hair. Around 5-7 minutes later, apply Function of Beauty leave in conditioner (throughout my hair except roots and start scrunching). Then add some Not Your Mother's curly hair gel and continue to scrunch. - heatless curlsI’ve been on a journey to make my hair healthy again , I recently bleached it a little bit , dyed it a light color and cut the split ends completely i would say my hair is pretty healthy right now but the thing is i stopped using heat on it and i’ve been doing heatless curls , they turn out really cute however the problem is i used to get keratin treatments to straighten my hair cuz my hair is naturally wavy so whenever i do heatless curls i could never get the top section of my hair to look good only the mids and ends look good the top of it just looks so messy and weird , does anyone have something similar going on or knows a technique that i could use for it to make it look blended and good? i usually do sock curls using this technique below submitted by /u/wanderinglostentity [link] [comments]
