Level Up Makeup for Oily/Combo Skin
Our take
Hi! I’m trying to level up my makeup for events, but still trying to get a natural look (if that’s possible). I tend to not be a fan of heavy makeup, but I’m trying to find something that might work for me.
Skin type: - Combo: oily t-zone, drier on outer edges. Heavy makeup will make my entire face oily, like out to my cheeks. - visible pores on inner cheeks
What I’m looking for: - medium coverage, but still looks like skin - better longevity. I don’t mind blotting or re-powdering later, but only once or twice, not every hour - more coverage for photos, but still natural in person. I’m also a photographer and I know heavier makeup shows up better in photos, but trying to find a balance
Note: I like my current routine for day-to-day, but want something for coverage for events
Current routine: - Dapsone (anti-bacteria for acne) - Cerave moisturizer - Trader Joe’s gel face sunscreen - Ilia Face Milk - ilia skin rewind complexion stick - Sephora setting powder - hairspray to set face for going out (don’t yell at me, it works so well)
What I’m considering: - primer (one size or porefessional) - foundations (estee lauder double wear or Lancôme teint idole) - setting (Kryolan fixing spray and dermacolor fixing powder)
Questions: 1. Best primer that works well with cream stick foundations AND liquid foundations? 2. Which foundation would you recommend for oily/combo skin that still looks natural in photos? 3. Blush recommendations that work well with this kind of base? (I don’t currently use one)
Thanks!!!
TLDR: Combo skin (oily T-zone, visible pores), currently using ILIA stick + simple routine. Want to level up to a natural, medium coverage look that lasts for events. Looking for primer + foundation recommendations

- What is your tried and true foundation you’d feel good using on your wedding day?I’m getting married in Greece next summer and wanted to test out my wedding day foundation before the actual big day - what are some of your holy grails? My skin type is combination and I tend to get oily in my t-zone. I have very sensitive skin and prone to break outs (another reason I want to test out the foundation beforehand). Hoping the foundation will: Withstand heat/sweat/tears Look like skin and won’t be cakey Fairly matte finish So far I have tried the below: \- Lancôme Teint Idole Ultra Wear (135N): did NOT last more than 4 hours and separated very badly at the end. \- Gucci Eternite de Beaute (230W): oxidized badly and difficult to blend. Felt very dry too. \- Prada Reveal Skin Optimizing Foundation: (40Y51Y): so far the best I’ve tried. Matte finish and have a skin like feel. \- Dior Backstage: I’ve tried this ages ago and loved it, but they reformulated recently and I was worried to retry. Please lmk if you guys think this is worth retrying! \- Armani Luminous Silk: this one is polarizing but I LOVED the finish. Unfortunately the formula made me break out :( In case helpful - my primer is the Hourglass Vanish Primer and setting powder is also by Hourglass. I use the Urban Decay All Nighter setting spray. If there are better options than these products, I’m also open to suggestions!! Thank you! submitted by /u/immanuelkanteven25 [link] [comments]
- Skin tint+ brush for oily skin?A couple days ago, I made a post asking for advice with my patchy concealer that I apply with a Real Techniques sponge (without foundation). There were so many suggestions and tips, some of which I haven't stopped thinking about since. Many people suggested I use a brush for application, instead of a sponge. Also, using cream blush/bronzer could make the end result more natural looking. I of course also researched other posts about some of these ideas as well. I came to the conclusion I want to try using a skin tint foundation with a brush. And a cream blush and bronzer. I read a lot of positive things about the L'Oreal True match skin tint and the Maybelline Fit Me skin tint. For blush I found the elf liquid blush that looks really nice, though I'm not sure if I'd need to apply that with a brush or my fingers. I also looked into foundation brushes. The Real Techniques brushes (Glow Round Base Makeup Brush and Expert Face Brush) have good reviews, but so do the Morphe brushes (M104). I haven't looked into a cream bronzer yet. My current makeup routine for my face products consist of: The Ordinary - Niacinamide / Nivea Sun - UV shine control (one or the other, depending on the season) Catrice - The Mattifier oil control primer NYX - Bare With Me concealer (applied with either a regular Real Techniques sponge or the RT Airblend sponge) Maybelline Fit Me powder (undereyes with a small, fluffy brush + all over my face with a large powder brush) Catrice - powder bronzer Milani - powder brush So now I'm wondering if the products I found are suitable for my oily skin. And if anyone has any other recommendations or tips to improve my makeup routine, that would be great! Thanks in advance!! submitted by /u/cottoneyedgoat [link] [comments]
- Base makeup for combo, acne prone, cool toned skinI love the natural look of skin tints on other people but am not sure if it will look right on my combination skin with acne scars. Tretinoin causes a lot of flakiness some days, and my moisturizer makes me look shiny. I don’t really use any primers or setting spray. Most base makeup I’ve used in the past is drugstore. Does it sound like skin tints may be better for me because of my dryness, or will they turn too greasy because of my moisturizer, also emphasizing my scars? Or should I focus on a setting spray? Basically, I want to have nice, natural looking base makeup but I’m not sure how to get there. I appreciate any recommendations! I also have very pink, cool toned skin which makes it hard to find a shade that matches from most brands. submitted by /u/purpleparuser [link] [comments]
- Upping the makeup game - taking it to the next levelI’m in a good place with my makeup routine for daily wear. However I want to start playing in the big leagues - someone help me out with some of the below please? - if I use glow liquid (think Saie beauty or drunk elephant drops etc), but then use a setting powder and additional powder products/finishing powder, does the glow still come through? Don’t want to waste my money if not? - I’m quite convinced that the Hourglass palette is going to be my investment, does anyone have an opinion of if a different brand will give more of a glowy look? - do you have any tips for making makeup last all day without using a lot of powder? Current routine/products: - Ilia skin tint - rare beauty stick bronzer - Isamaya cream blush/highlight combo - By Terry setting powder (don’t use this everywhere) - basic brown eyeliner & mascara - basic brow gel submitted by /u/jenbee3 [link] [comments]
