Rate my skincare routine! (Or really, just give me advice how to do better)
Our take
Hiya - when my son was applying to college last yer there were all these "rate my chances" sites he looked at. I kept thinking I want that for my skincare routine! So I'm finally asking. :).
I am a 54yo white woman. My skin doesn't have any real problems and I've always been super grateful for that! My "issues" are just normal aging -- lack of firmness (hate that), some fine lines that I don't mind too much (yet, lol) and some marionette lines (also hate). I am interested in doing all I can to maintain my skin's health and youthfulness as well as I can for as long as I can (without any botox, needles, fillers or surgery). Here's what I currently do:
Morning:
- Wash with Kate Somerville Exfolikate Cleanser or sometimes lately Tatcha Rice Wash Skin Cleanser
- Sometimes - not every day, but about idk, about 2 times a week - i use Dennis Gross Alpha Beta Universal Daily Peel pads
- Apply 1 squirt of Sunday Riley Good Genes Lactic Acid Serum
- Apply a dab of moisturizer - either good ol' Cerave or, more often, Clarins Multi-Active Jour Niacinamide + Sea Holly Extract
- Sunscreen up! ROC Hydration+ Moisuturizer with Hyaluronic Accid (spf30)
Evening:
- Wash with Kate Somerville Exfolikate Cleanser
- Apply pea-sized amount Tretinoin 0.025% one my face, another same size amount on my neck and upper chest area
- Moisturize with Dr. Dennis Gross Advanced Retinol and Ferulic Intense Wrinkle Cream
- Every once in a while (approx 1-2 times per week): instead of the trent and Dennis Gross moisturizer, I do this combo: Kate Somerville Exfolikate Intensive Exfoliating Treatment followed by a healthy squirt of Biossance Squalane+ Vitamin C Rose Oil
I don't know much about what ingredients I need. I've read articles but it just never sticks in my brain. So what I'd really like to know from you is:
- Anything I am missing from my routine?
- Anything I can cut out? I feel like I fell into some of these products. Sure, I like how they feel on my skin -- but are they working for me? (Or duplicated by something else?)
- Any thing I'm wasting my money on? (Probably a lot, lol) I'd love to know some cheaper swaps that will do the job just as well or better.
- In short: what can I do better??
I included links here not as advertisements but so you can look at the ingredients if you're not familiar with the product.
Thank you!!

- Need some advice on my skincare routineHi everyone, I’m new to skincare and haven’t really had a consistent skincare routine until recently so I wanted to get opinions on my current routine. I’m a 26 year old woman. I have normal to combination skin that feels balanced after cleansing, with slightly more visible pores and oil in my nose and inner cheek area. I don’t get much acne, just occasional small whiteheads, but I do have noticeable sebaceous filaments on my nose. I have some persistent redness around my nostrils that’s always there but not irritated or flaky. My skin has freckles and tends to develop more pigmentation in the sun, with some larger flat sun spots as I’ve gotten older. I’m starting to see mild fine lines around my eyes and on my forehead, especially when my skin is dehydrated, but overall my skin is pretty even and not very sensitive. Here is my current routine: Mornings: Cleanser→ Cetaphil Oily Skin Cleanser Vitamin C→ SkinCeuticals C E Ferulic Azelaic acid (nose / redness)→ Paula’s Choice 10% Azelaic Acid Booster Skinfix Moisturizer Supergoop Sunscreen SPF 40 Evenings: Retinol nights (most nights) Cleanser→ Cetaphil Oily Skin Cleanser Retinol→ CeraVe Resurfacing Retinol Serum Skinfix moisturizer BHA nights (2x/week) (Monday and Thursday) Cleanser BHA (nose + pores)→ Paula’s Choice 2% BHA Liquid Exfoliant Skinfix moisturizer submitted by /u/eveningcrimson [link] [comments]
- 25 and my skin looks ROUGH, help!!Hi! I am a 25F with skin that shouldn't look as bad as it does. Wrinkles on my forehead, lots of texture, and dark spots from acne. My skin is hard to read in terms of oily vs dry but it is acne prone and definitely can get dry at times and oily at other times. Right now, this has been my night routine for a few months. It hasn't been great in eliminating lines, spots or texture but my skin has felt more hydrated. - Round lab foam cleanser - Anua peach toner - Prescription tret - Cetaphil daily moisturizing lotion for dry sensitive skin I am ashamed to admit it but in the morning I usually just throw on SPF 50 and call it good. I have been doing some research but I am getting kinda overwhelmed with all the info I am getting. Would these be better routines to match my needs? Do any of these products interact? Night: - Ma:nyo pure cleansing oil - Vanicream cleanser - Byoma milky toner - Prescription tret/The Ordinary Azelaic acid suspension 10% cream, alternating every other day - Avene Cicalfate protective cream Morning: - Vanicream cleanser - Byoma milky toner - SPF moisturizer submitted by /u/ranch518 [link] [comments]
- Is This Skincare Routine Effective and Safe?Hi! I’ve put together a simple skincare routine and I’d love some feedback on whether it makes sense or if I’m over/underdoing anything. I have normal skin (not oily or dry most of the time). I don’t have acne, pimples, or skin conditions. My skin only gets slightly oily (especially nose) when it’s very hot or I’ve been sweating. My main concern is hyperpigmentation and the blackheads on my nose. I have darker areas on my knees, elbows, neck, and inner thighs. My goal is to gradually even out my skin tone and have healthy, smooth, and bright skin overall. I also want to remove the blackheads on my nose and make sure that I don't get blackheads on other parts of my face. I’m trying to keep my routine simple and safe, because I’ve never used skincare properly before and I don’t want to irritate my skin with too many products. Here’s what I planned: -> Morning Routine: Shower / body wash Dove soap for face (lukewarm water) Dove Original Beauty Cream Bar Dove Sensitive Skin Beauty Bar Regular soap for body Loofah only 2–3x per week (gentle use) Moisturizer CeraVe Daily Moisturizing Lotion OR Cetaphil Moisturizing Cream Apply lightly on face + dry/dark body areas Sunscreen Neutrogena Ultra Sheer SPF 50 OR La Roche-Posay Anthelios SPF 50 Apply on all exposed skin Reapply if outdoors for long hours -> Night Routine Wash face with Dove soap (to remove sunscreen/moisturizer) Moisturizer (face + body only if needed) Dark body areas (2–3x per week only) AmLactin 12% Lactic Acid Lotion Apply only on dark areas (knees, elbows, underarms, etc.) Moisturizer after 10–15 min if skin feels dry Blackheads (nose only, 2–3x per week) Paula’s Choice 2% BHA OR CeraVe SA Cleanser Leave-on (Paula’s Choice) OR rinse-off (CeraVe) Optional under-eye treatment La Roche-Posay Pigmentclar Eyes Lifestyle habits Wash face after heavy sweating Change pillowcases weekly Thank you so much! submitted by /u/VeterinarianSuch3159 [link] [comments]
- Growing skincare stash and could use some help figuring out the right order?Been adding a few things lately and now I have more than I know what to do with. Working with Drunk Elephant B-Hydra, Rare Beauty moisturizer, Paula's Choice exfoliant, First Aid Beauty KP bump eraser, Tatcha rice wash and Kiehl's Ultra Facial Cream. Mainly unsure how often to use the exfoliant and what the best layering order would be. How do you guys manage a bigger routine without overdoing it? submitted by /u/Neither-Bar-6499 [link] [comments]
